Best Towns for Camping in Central Wisconsin: Ranked by 2026 Rates, Site Counts and Booking Rules

ShareXLinkedInFacebookEmail

Waupaca is our top overall pick for camping in central Wisconsin because it is the only town in the region that credibly spans both camping styles: Hartman Creek State Park's 103 family sites and roughly 10 miles of hiking trails sit beside Waupaca'more Fun Campground's published 2026 rates of $44 to $65 nightly on Old Taylor Lake. The rest of the leading group is Wisconsin Rapids and Wood County, with the cheapest clean published public rates in the region ($22 to $40), Stevens Point for lake camping plus 31 miles of connected trail, and Mauston and Necedah for big-water reservoir camping.

The organizing rule for this whole list: match the town to your booking window and hookup needs before you match it to a map. Portage County stops advance reservations within seven days of arrival and Adams County within five, so a cheaper campground can be unusable for a last-minute trip while a pricier state park still books same-day. That rule, not scenery alone, decides several picks below.

How we ranked these camping towns

We built this list only from current operator rate pages, active county booking portals and DNR property pages. Explicitly dated 2026 schedules were kept separate from undated operator prices and from posted 2027 changes, because mixing a 2027 rate into a 2026 comparison understates or overstates real costs.

Every town entry names its campgrounds and reports verified site counts, nightly rates, seasons and reservation rules. Where published counts conflict, we report both numbers rather than picking one: South Wood County Park headlines 73 sites but lists 66 electric plus 8 non-electric, and Mirror Lake State Park headlines 151 family sites while its three named campgrounds total 166.

One caution applies to this whole category. Published prices are not live availability quotes, and facility notices change: Buckhorn State Park's September 16, 2026 construction update lists sites 1 through 3 closed for the season and sites 20 through 22 closed August 1 through October 10. Confirm current rates and any facility notices with each operator before booking.

Our ranking criteria: price transparency, campground variety within the town, water and trail access, and how forgiving the booking rules are for short-notice trips.

Chapter

1. Waupaca: the best overall basecamp for trails, lakes and both camping styles

Pick · 01

Waupaca

4.6 / 5
$44-$65 per night (S'more Fun, 2026) plus state-park site rates at Hartman Creek

Hartman Creek State Park has 103 family sites and five group sites in red pine or an old apple orchard mixed with hardwoods, two shower buildings, about 10 miles of hiking (including three miles of the Ice Age Trail) and about 12 miles of off-road cycling including six miles of singletrack. Waupaca'more Fun Campground, on Old Taylor Lake from May 1 to October 1, publishes 2026 rates of $44 to $49 basic water-and-electric, $55 to $59 deluxe concrete pads and $64 to $65 full hookup, with two-night weekend minimums (three on holidays and the Iola car show) and seven camping cabins plus a yurt. No other town in this comparison puts both styles in one basecamp.

Family sites103 at Hartman Creek, plus 5 group sitesHiking~10 miles, including 3 miles of Ice Age TrailCycling~12 miles off-road, 6 miles singletrack (trail pass for riders 16+)Private resort seasonMay 1-Oct 1
What we loved
  • Only town in the region pairing a trail-rich state park with a fully priced-out private resort
  • S'more Fun rates include one unit, two adults, up to four kids and two vehicles
  • Chain O' Lakes setting adds boating and swimming within a short drive
Keep in mind
  • Hartman Creek's campground closes December 1 through April 1 even though the park stays open
  • S'more Fun caps a site at four adults, tighter than some resort rivals
Best for Mixed groups of tents and full-hookup RVs who want trails and lakes from one basecamp
Visit Waupaca →

The cabins at S'more Fun lack bathrooms and kitchens, so treat them as upgraded camping, not self-contained lodging. Riders 16 and older need a state trail pass for Hartman Creek's bike trails.

Chapter

2. Wisconsin Rapids and Wood County: the cheapest verified public camping in the region

Pick · 02
$22-$40 per night plus a $10 reservation fee (2026)

Wood County publishes a clean 2026 schedule: $22 non-electric, $27 standard electric, $30 waterfront electric and $40 full hookup at Dexter, plus a $10 reservation fee. South Wood County Park surrounds 148-acre Lake Wazeecha; Cera has nine boat and fishing docks; North Park sits on the Yellow River dams; and Dexter wraps nearly 300-acre Lake Dexter. Waterski tournament dates block some South Park reservations.

2026 rates$22 non-electric, $27 electric, $30 waterfront, $40 full hookup (Dexter)Off-season discountsMay 1-15 and October 1 to closingPark networkSouth (73 headline), Cera (65), North (99), Dexter (109 sites)Water settingsLake Wazeecha, Yellow River dams, ~300-acre Lake Dexter
What we loved
  • Lowest verified published public rates in this comparison
  • Four county parks across three distinct water settings
  • A 4.1-mile mostly paved trail rings Lake Wazeecha at South Park
Keep in mind
  • Lake Dexter is shallow with stumps, so waterskiing and tubing are inadvisable
  • Refunds are issued as account credit, not cash
Best for Budget-conscious campers who want clean published public rates
Visit Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin →

Wood County has already posted 2027 rates of $23 to $31, so keep the years straight when comparing. At three nights and a $10 fee, a standard electric stay totals $91.

Chapter

3. Stevens Point, Plover and Amherst Junction: lake camping plus 31 miles of trail

Pick · 03

Stevens Point, Wisconsin

4.3 / 5
$28 electric, $22 canoe sites per night (2026)

Portage County electric sites run $28 nightly and Jordan Park canoe sites $22, May 1 to October 31. The Green Circle Trail (31 miles) and Tomorrow River State Trail (29 miles) connect the camping corridor through Stevens Point, Plover and Amherst Junction, and Lake Emily, DuBay and Rosholt's Collins Park add smaller-lake options. The seven-day booking cutoff is what costs this corridor the top spot.

SeasonMay 1-October 31Jordan Park271 acres with 85-acre Jordan PondTrails31-mile Green Circle, 29-mile Tomorrow River State TrailDuBay Park36 numbered electric sites
What we loved
  • Two major trail systems connect the camping corridor
  • Electric service runs 20-, 30- and 50-amp at developed sites
  • Canoe sites at $22 are the cheapest structured public sites on this list
Keep in mind
  • Reservations stop seven days before arrival, so last-minute trips fall to on-site self-registration
  • An $8 reservation fee and an $8 cancellation fee apply
  • Collins Park's closing date is ambiguous in county materials (late September or October 1)
Best for Campers who want lake sites and trail networks in one corridor, booked more than a week out
Chapter

4. Mauston, Necedah and the Castle Rock and Petenwell corridor: best for big-water boating

Pick · 04
$20-$30 per night (Juneau County Castle Rock Park)

Juneau County's Castle Rock Park, 12 miles north of Mauston, has nearly 300 sites with more than 200 electric at $20 to $30 on 16,000-acre Castle Rock Lake. Necedah's Buckhorn State Park adds 69 family sites plus 50 cart-in sites and group tent sites for up to 40 people, and Juneau County Wilderness Park has 127 sites on Lake Petenwell. This is the region's big-water pick.

Castle Rock Park~300 sites, 200+ electric, on 16,000-acre Castle Rock Lake2026 rates$20 non-electric, $25 electric, $30 waterfront electricWilderness Park127 sites (107 electric) on 23,000-acre Lake PetenwellReservations7 days ahead required
What we loved
  • Largest electric-site inventories on this list
  • Two huge reservoirs for boating, waterskiing and fishing
  • Buckhorn State Park adds 50 secluded cart-in sites nearby
Keep in mind
  • Seven-day advance booking requirement locks out late planners
  • Adams County's separate Castle Rock Park (near Friendship) is a different park with a five-day cutoff
  • Buckhorn's September 16, 2026 construction notice lists several closed sites
Best for Boaters who want reservoir-scale water at county prices
Visit Mauston, Wisconsin →

Do not confuse the two Castle Rock parks: Adams County's Castle Rock Park near Friendship charges $25 to $30 for RVs with a five-day reservation cutoff, and its 500 and 200 unit figures at Petenwell and Castle Rock are unit allowances, not developed site counts.

Chapter

5. Mosinee, Wausau and Merrill: reservoir peninsulas, a river gorge and one no-campfire exception

Pick · 05
$24-$31 per night plus an $8 reservation fee (2026)

Marathon County charges $24 to $31 nightly plus an $8 reservation fee, and Mosinee's Big Eau Pleine Park spreads 106 sites across two campgrounds on a peninsula reaching two miles into the reservoir. Wausau's Marathon Park is convenient to the city but campfires are prohibited, which is a decisive mismatch for a fire-centered trip; Merrill's Council Grounds State Park is the clearer conventional choice.

Big Eau Pleine106 sites across two campgrounds on a 1,450-acre peninsulaTrails12 miles, plus three boat landingsDells of the Eau Claire28 sites in a rocky river gorgeMerrill's Council Grounds52 family sites (19 electric)
What we loved
  • Two-mile peninsula setting unlike the county lake parks
  • The Dells of the Eau Claire offers a genuinely different gorge landscape
  • Council Grounds publishes clear group capacities (sites A and B hold 32 people each) and has a 217-foot beach with an adaptive kayak
Keep in mind
  • Marathon Park in Wausau prohibits campfires
  • October camping at Big Eau Pleine is self-registration only
Best for Peninsula reservoir camping with real trail mileage

6. Wild Rose, Wautoma and Hancock: private lake resorts for families

Pick · 06

Wild Rose, Wisconsin

3.9 / 5
Dynamic via Campspot at Evergreen; Oasis full hookup with a $10 reservation fee

Waushara County's private resorts run the built-amenity end of the market. Evergreen in Wild Rose has 246 water-and-electric sites on Kusel Lake with rates through Campspot (renters must be 21 or older), Oasis in Hancock includes four wristbands per site with an inflatable waterpark and heated pool from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and Redgranite's Pearl Lake (the former Flanagan's) advertises full-hookup sites from about $36. Wautoma's White River Campground is the quieter river-side option.

What we loved
  • Built recreation water (inflatable waterpark, heated pool) rather than only natural lakes
  • Full-hookup inventory across the cluster
Keep in mind
  • Evergreen's rates are date-quoted only, cottages require three nights and a $1,000 down payment
  • Oasis prohibits Saturday arrivals and departures
  • White River's posted schedule dates to January 1, 2023, so confirm at 920-787-9171
Best for Families who want pools, waterparks and organized activities

7. Black River Falls, Hatfield and Warrens: rustic forest camping and resort scale

Black River State Forest Wisconsin EntrancePick · 07
$25 off-season per unit at West Arbutus; state-forest date pricing

Black River State Forest is the rustic anchor: Castle Mound (35 sites, year-round), East Fork (24 non-electric, with canoe access to the East Fork of the Black River) and Pigeon Creek (38 non-electric), all on the state reservation system. Hatfield's West Arbutus County Park adds 44 sites including 15 lakeshore on Lake Arbutus, with a $25 off-season rate and a three-night advance minimum waived for day-of bookings. Warrens' Jellystone, at 415 RV sites and 162 cabins, is the resort-scaled opposite pole, and demand spikes around the September Cranberry Festival.

Castle Mound35 sites (14 electric), open year-roundEast Fork24 non-electric sites with river canoe accessPigeon Creek38 non-electric sitesWest Arbutus (Hatfield)44 sites, 15 lakeshore, on Lake Arbutus
What we loved
  • Three distinct state-forest campgrounds plus a county lake park
  • West Arbutus waives its three-night advance minimum for day-of bookings
  • Dells-side options like Mill Bluff (21 rustic sites) and Elroy's hike-in trail campground stay quiet
Keep in mind
  • East Fork and Pigeon Creek have no electricity
  • Warrens Jellystone (415 RV sites, 162 cabins) publishes no date-independent camping price
Best for Rustic, quiet, non-electric camping with year-round options

8. Baraboo and the Wisconsin Dells area: famous parks, with a waterfront caveat

Mirror Lake State Park Wisconsin BeachPick · 08
State-system date pricing at Mirror Lake and Devil's Lake

Mirror Lake State Park's headline says 151 family sites, but its own campground descriptions total 166, so use the campground-level numbers for planning. Devil's Lake has 423 sites, and the DNR explicitly notes the campsites are not within view of the lake. This is a strong pick for hikers and classic park scenery, not for shoreline camping.

Mirror Lake151 family sites by headline; named campgrounds total 166 (Sandstone Ridge 68, Cliffwood 35, Bluewater Bay 63)Devil's Lake423 sites across three regular campgroundsWinter campingMirror Lake limited to plowed electric sites 58-65Group sitesup to 20 people each at Mirror Lake
What we loved
  • Two of the state's best-known parks within one town's orbit
  • Year-round camping at Quartzite (Devil's Lake) and limited winter plowing at Mirror Lake
Keep in mind
  • The DNR says Devil's Lake campsites are not within view of the lake, roughly one-third to one mile away depending on the campground
  • Mirror Lake's headline count conflicts with its campground counts
Best for Hikers who want classic Wisconsin park scenery, not shoreline campsites

9. Montello, Green Lake and Pardeeville: resort camping at resort prices

Pick · 09
$82-$96 per night plus a $10 booking fee (2026)

The southern cluster is where resort pricing starts. Green Lake Campground's 2026 rates run $82 water-and-electric to $96 lake or pull-through, with a four-pool aquatic center and holiday three-night minimums that add $5 nightly. Montello's Buffalo Lake Camping Resort has 45 overnight sites from $55 to $75 with lake access across the road, and Pardeeville's Indian Trails starts at $58.

Green Lake Campground370 sites, $82 water/electric to $96 lake or pull-through (2026)Buffalo Lake Camping Resort (Montello)45 overnight sites, $55-$75 plus a 3% card feeIndian Trails (Pardeeville)from $58, includes children through age 20Aquatic centerfour pools at Green Lake Campground
What we loved
  • Largest amenity package in this comparison
  • Full hookups and pull-throughs for big rigs
Keep in mind
  • Three-night holiday minimums add $5 nightly
  • The beach is on Whitetail Springs, not automatically Big Green Lake
  • Indian Trails' included-children-through-age-20 policy makes its base price hard to compare with under-18 operators
Best for Campers who want a four-pool aquatic center and golf on site
Visit Green Lake, Wisconsin →

The price gap is concrete: a three-night full-hookup base totals $277 at Green Lake versus $91 in Wood County and $85 in Adams County.

How to choose: match the town to your trip, not the map

Pick Waupaca if you want one basecamp covering both wooded state-park camping and a developed private resort with published 2026 prices, or if your group mixes tent families and full-hookup RVs. Pick Wood or Marathon County for the lowest verified public rates, the Petenwell and Castle Rock corridor for reservoir boating, Stevens Point for trail-plus-lake trips booked more than a week out, and Black River State Forest for rustic quiet.

The booking-window rule, applied: Wisconsin state parks reserve same-day through 11 months ahead, while Portage County cuts off at seven days, Juneau County at seven and Adams County at five. For a short-notice weekend, a higher-priced reservable site beats a cheaper campground whose window has closed.

Also budget for what published rates exclude: vehicle passes (Adams includes two, Juneau one), reservation fees ($8 to $10 in the counties, $9.30 for state parks), the $15 per-night nonresident surcharge at state parks, wristband systems and site-lock charges.

Chapter

ExampleCalculationThree-night published base total

Wood County standard electric, 20263 x $27 + $10 fee$91

Green Lake full hookup, 20263 x $89 + $10 booking fee$277
State-park nonresident increment3 x $15 + $9.30 reservation fee$54.30 on top of base

Waupaca's two styles bracket the whole market: a Hartman Creek state-park site on the state system versus S'more Fun's $44 to $65 private range with occupancy included. All figures are illustrative published rates, not live availability quotes; taxes, holiday add-ons and facility notices vary, so confirm with each operator before booking.

How much does it cost to camp in Waupaca in 2026?

At Waupaca'more Fun Campground, published 2026 rates run $44 to $49 for basic water-and-electric, $55 to $59 for deluxe concrete pads, and $64 to $65 for full hookup, with the rate covering one unit, two adults, up to four kids and two vehicles. Hartman Creek State Park prices its sites through the state reservation system by date and site type. Weekend minimums are two nights, or three on holidays and the Iola car show.

Can you camp at Hartman Creek State Park in the winter?

No. The family and group campgrounds close December 1 through April 1, even though the park itself stays open year-round with 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. day-use hours. If you want winter camping in central Wisconsin, Castle Mound in Black River State Forest and Quartzite at Devil's Lake are the documented year-round options.

Which central Wisconsin campgrounds take last-minute reservations?

Wisconsin state parks and forests accept reservations from the same day through 11 months ahead, which makes them the reliable late-booking choice. The county systems are stricter: Portage and Juneau counties require seven days' lead time, and Adams County requires five, after which unreserved sites become first come, first served through on-site self-registration.

What is the cheapest county campground in central Wisconsin?

Wood County's 2026 schedule starts at $22 per night for a non-electric site and $27 for a standard electric site, plus a $10 reservation fee, which is the cheapest clean published public pricing in this comparison. Marathon County is close behind at $24 to $29 plus an $8 fee. Off-season discounts in Wood County apply May 1 to 15 and October 1 through closing.

Can you reserve a campsite at Wisconsin state parks the same day you arrive?

Yes. The state's Going to Camp system accepts same-day reservations up to 11 months ahead, with a $9.30 reservation fee. Nonresidents pay an additional $15 per night on top of the site charge, and a state park vehicle admission pass is separate.
